Hey J. thanks for the reminder about that book. I saw it in the one-page "If you liked this, you'll love these" summaries at the back of the Wild Swans paperback I read when I first got to China - been meaning to look for it, but forgot the title.

As for the tourist stuff, I noticed that I got a lot of hits from similar entries I did about Dalian and so it showed that there's a need for the info. As my blog touts "Life In China" and as a foreigner tourism is a big part of it... meh, it fits I guess.

Speaking of restaurant reviews... I just got asked by China Expat Magazine to do a write up on my favourite restaurant... as I've been to like three in Suzhou, it might be tough. I'm either going to have to get out and try a few, or see about writing it about Dalian... or not do it. Decisions, decisions.

Thanks for the info on the garden. I wish more people would post up to date reviews of tourist destinations/restaurants/etc. in their cities.

Also, if you're interested, the most accessible account of the Taiping Rebellion is by Jonathan Spence entitled "God's Chinese Son." It's a great read on a train and also the most recent in a long line of Western scholarship on the Taiping.
